“One of the first things enslavers did was enact laws to criminalize our

ancestors to keep them from reading. They feared that if the enslaved

Africans read books, they could not suppress them. The slave masters knew

what power books held.  Those books had stories and knowledge of where

our ancestors came from and who they used to be. Discovering this would

disrupt the chattel slavery system they were trying to build.”

Pastor Rhonda Thomas | Executive Director

Black history, Black culture, and Black lives are continually under attack. From chattel slavery, lynching, and Jim Crow segregation, to redlining, the war on drugs, and mass incarceration, to voter suppression, the school-to-prison pipeline, and police brutality,

the list of oppressions perpetrated against Black people in this country is endless. We continually find ourselves not just fighting against the systems that perpetuate these racist oppressions, but fighting against these same systems that want to erase this part of America’s heinous past, especially in the state of Florida.

Florida Legislation

Due to Florida legislation, HB 7, known as the “Stop Woke Act,” has made the factual teaching

of Black history a crime, particularly when the teaching of large segments of our history gets

erroneously labeled as Critical Race Theory. This has resulted in books being banned from public

schools and libraries. In 2023, SB 266 was also signed into law, which not only dismantled

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs from state universities, but have also banned the teaching of any concept in general education classes that is “based on theories that systemic racism, sexism, oppression, and privilege are inherent in the institutions of the United States and were created to maintain social, political, and economic inequities.”

OUR STANCE

While Florida has been declared by Governor DeSantis as “the freest state in America,” he and the state legislature have simultaneously resorted to policing

Black existence. This is precisely why Faith in Florida is taking a stance. We will

not be legislated into acquiescence, allowing Black history to be erased and

Black voices to be silenced. We have committed to the teaching of Black history

through the lens of truth, not through a lens that is exclusionary, revisionist,

racist, and reeks of fascism. We ask all those who agree to join us in the fight to

keep Black history alive and to commit to teaching it accurately and with fidelity.

To that end, we present you with Faith in Florida’s Black History / Black Studies Toolkit. In it, you will find resource lists covering various topics that you’ll find instrumental in the study of Black history and Black culture.
